Synopsis
The 2014 movie “Pompeii” directed by Paul W.S. Anderson is an epic historical, disaster and romance movie. It combines romance, gladiator actions, and disaster while retelling the story of Pompeii, a city famously destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D, and using Mount Vesuvius eruption as a backdrop.
The story revolves around Milo (Kit Harington) who is a Celtic gladiator. Milo “The Celt” is a gladiator and in the early scenes of the movie, we see him fighting in the arena. Because of his skills in the arena, he is quickly noticed by the Roman officials who view him as a potential champion. Milo is a sword fighting gladiator who goes through the ordeal of his eastern Celtic family and tribe being wiped out by Roman soldiers. Because of his adult enslavement, he is able to fight.
Currently, on the road towards the city, Milo meets Cassia, the daughter of Severus, a wealthy merchant from Pompeii. Cassia, played by Emily Browning, had spent a year in Rome, from which she was returning home. She got disillusioned from the corruption and cruelty she saw during the year in Rome. Though both of them feel a spark during the meeting, class and status differences, along with Cassia’s past does act as a hindrance.
During the journey, Milo is taken to the grand amphitheater in town, where he continues the fights that he was doing under the ‘supervision of’ Graecus the local lanista (gladiator manager) ‘owner’ of the place. With him is Atticus (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje}, a gladiator on the brink of freedom. They are initially rivals, but over time, Milo and Atticus’s bond deepens, and with time, they undergo the same challenges together, becoming friends. This friendship is vital to the emotional parts of the film.
Senator Corvus (Kiefer Sutherland) the antagonist of the story is a merciless Roman who was in charge of the onslaught of Milo’s people. He now comes to Pompeii as a part a political and mercantile plan. With the intention of marrying Cassia, he aims to gain control of her father’s lands and wealth. Corvus is repelling in romance and is a crude tyrant, which Cassia sees clearly, but intensifying tension.
Mount Vesuvius seems to be coming back to life, and the Earth rumbles, revealing Pompeii’s imminent doom. While the Romans disregard the warning, continuing their political games, the filmmakers create suspense-filled scenes, hinting at the simultaneous execution of the gladiator battle and the eruption of the volcano. As chaos reigns and the city suffers from the showers of ash, rocks, and fire, the audience gets a good look at the destruction brought by the volcano.
Milo and Atticus battle Pompeii’s destruction to rescue Cassia and escape the city. The last segment encapsulates the frantic dash through crumbling structures, rising lava, and panicked crowds. As the story approaches its ending, Pompeii’s citizens realize that there’s no escape from the city’s fate. Cassia and Milo embrace, accepting their fate, ready to be consumed by the pyroclastic flow together. Rather than fighting through the chaos to escape, the pair chooses togetherness in surrender.

Pompeii frequently comes under fire for having a straightforward and predictable story, lack of character development, and formulaic dialogue. Although the historical background of the film has a lot of promise, the script seems to lack the emotional nuances and layers. Some critics believe the romance between Milo and Cassia is bland and overly dependent on predictable tropes.
The application of English accents to Roman characters has drawn its fair share of attention, as has the more theatrical portions of Kiefer Sutherland’s performance. The film’s blend of political intrigue, romance, and disaster often has a dramatic shift in tone.
In spite of these issues, Pompeii has managed to attract a small audience who appreciate historical epics and action packed movies driven by emotions.
